This review paper (in PDF format) by Paul Froggatt and David J. Lowe, published in the New Zealand Journal of Geology & Geophysics (1990), lists the 39 late Quaternary tephras (erupted from four rhyolite caldera volcanoes since about 50,000 years ago) that had been identified by 1990, and gives a summary of the evidence for identifying and dating each of them.
