Television presenter Peter Read was the ‘people’s astronomer’. During the 1960s and 1970s he delivered a monthly television series, The night sky, which introduced thousands of New Zealanders to astronomy. It conveyed the latest images and news of space exploration into their living rooms.
In this television clip he tells of the preparations being made at Cape Karikari, Northland, to fire rockets into the ionosphere during an eclipse of the Sun on 31 May 1965. The aerials behind Peter Read receive recordings from the rockets.
