Frank Bateson, astronomer

Frank Bateson, astronomer

Frank Bateson is pictured outside one of the original huts of the Mt John Observatory, New Zealand’s foremost research observatory. He was one of the driving forces behind its establishment, and served as its first astronomer-in-charge, from 1963 to 1969. The observatory is located in the Mackenzie Country, South Canterbury, sheltered by the Southern Alps. Away from city lights, the site is characterised by clear, dark night skies – ideal for viewing.
