Kōrero: Hot springs, mud pools and geysers

Mud pools, Ōrākei Kōrako

This video shows boiling mud in a hydrothermal explosion crater, north-east of Ruapatu Cave, Ōrākei Kōrako. Steam and acid gases have turned the rocks to clay. In low-lying areas where water collects, the steam heats the water to form boiling mud. The video was made in March 2004.
