Kōrero: Newspapers

Street newspaper, 1944

Video file

During wartime, public demand for up-to-date news coverage is strongest, yet media may face restrictions on their work. During the Second World War, news of overseas battles and supplies of imported newsprint were both strictly controlled by the government. This 1944 government newsreel shows how an Auckland bookseller maintained public interest in war news despite these restrictions.
