Schoolchildren were given free milk between 1937 and 1967. This was revived on a limited basis in 2012 when Fonterra, New Zealand's largest dairy products company, supplied free long-life milk to some Northland schools as part of a pilot project. While the drink was not universally popular, many children liked it and the programme was to be extended throughout New Zealand.
