New Zealanders of Kayforce, sent to the Korean War, saw the contrast between Korea and Japan. South Korea in the early 1950s was desperately poor and suffering from the effects of the war taking place on its soil. Japan, where most of the Kayforce troops went on leave, seemed well-ordered and welcoming.
