The landing of Anzac soldiers on the Gallipoli Peninsula followed from the failure of the Allies' naval attack on the Dardanelles straits. As shown in this remarkable contemporary film clip, when the troops landed they faced fierce resistance from the Turks and the difficulty of advancing up steep terrain. The film also shows some of the conditions in the trenches and the use of devices such as periscopes.
