Map of Gallipoli (1 o 2)

This map shows the main points in the Anzac sector of Gallipoli. The Australian and New Zealand division (Anzacs) landed at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915 and then advanced uphill towards the feature known as Baby 700. They were pushed back and eventually became responsible for the front line from Courtney's Post to Walker's Ridge. In early May the New Zealand Brigade was taken out of the line and transferred to Cape Helles. There they took part in a three-day attack from 8 May, but suffered heavily for no great gain of territory. The New Zealanders returned to the Anzac Cove sector. On August 6 an assault was begun with the aim of capturing Chunuk Bair and Hill 971 in the Sari Bair range. On 8 August the Wellington Battalion captured Chunuk Bair. They held it for two days but a swift Turkish response resulted in the British troops who had relieved the New Zealanders on the hill-top being driven off. After this failure the weary New Zealand troops were withdrawn briefly to the Greek Island of Lemnos for some rest and recreation, and by the time they returned to Gallipoli the weather was turning cold. Evacuation was completed successfully on 19 and 20 December 1915. Click on the thumbnails to see images of five sites of significance to the New Zealanders on the Gallipoli peninsula.
