In the 1990s and early 2000s there was a series of steps towards a closer economic and political relationship between Australia and New Zealand, including a common regulation of food standards. The process began in 1993, as this television clip describes, when New Zealand began to work with Australia's National Food Authority. From 1996 there was full integration with the establishment of the Australia New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA). By establishing common standards for the acceptable content of foods, trade between the two countries was facilitated. From 2002 the agency was known as Food Safety Australia New Zealand.
