Announcing the snap election

Announcing the snap election

In June 1984 Muldoon, tired and ill, was dealing with industrial and economic problems. When one of his MPs, Marilyn Waring, voted with the opposition on nuclear-free legislation it proved the final straw, and Muldoon called a snap election. His televised announcement created shock waves, not least because he appeared to be the worse for liquor at the time. Standing next to him in this clip is National Party president Sue Wood.
