From February to May 1995 Whanganui Māori occupied Pākaitore (Moutoa Gardens) in Whanganui city to protest about historical grievances. Young and old alike saw the occupation as a way to restore the mana (authority) of the Whanganui people. An agreement was later signed between iwi and local and national government over co-management of the site.
