Rore Hapipi, also known as Rowley Habib, received a Te Waka Toi national Māori arts award in 2013 for his body of writing, which includes a number of plays. In this extract from the Radio New Zealand programme Te ahi kaa, broadcast in October 2013, Hapipi talks about the attitudes he and other Māori writers held when he first began writing plays.
