In 1946 the New Zealand Broadcasting Service set up the Mobile Recording Unit, an ex-air-force truck equipped with two disc recorders. Over the next few years staff travelled throughout Taranaki, Waikato, the Thames valley and Otago recording people's memories, music and events that happened when the truck was in town. The recordings have proved invaluable for broadcasters, historians and linguists, and are stored at Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision Archive in Christchurch.
