Jason Lee (left), skipper of the Danielle, and Nino D’Esposito look over a 273.6-kilogram southern bluefin tuna. The giant fish was caught in 2005 from their fishing vessel 160 kilometres off Cape Kidnappers. After its gills and stomach were filled with ice, the tuna was wrapped and air-freighted to Japan, destined to become sashimi (thinly sliced raw fish). In the 2000s, southern bluefin tuna could fetch up to $50 per kilogram on the Japanese market.
