Earthquakes are part of life in New Zealand, but fortunately most earthquakes are centered outside populated areas. The 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake was the most damaging in the 20th century. A total of 256 people were killed, mainly in Napier and Hastings. Since then, buildings have been designed so that they do not collapse when shaken by an earthquake.
