Waimangu guide Alfred Warbrick used sandbags to modify and slow the discharge from a spring close to the edge of Lake Rotomahana. Silica has gradually been deposited over the sandbags, producing the feature known as Warbrick Terrace, which is partly covered by colourful algae.
