Kōrero: Life in hot springs

These slimy mats are in the hot springs at Ōrākei Kōrako. They are made of cyanobacteria surrounded by a gelatinous material that holds them together. A thin film of warm water covers the mats and keeps them moist. The bubbles are produced by the bacteria during photosynthesis. Some insects are also dependent on the mat for nourishment.
