Smooth oreo dory is a deep-water fish that is trawled year round from depths of 600–1,000 metres. In the 1980s and 1990s the New Zealand fishing industry increasingly caught such deep-water fish species. Hake and hoki dominate the deep-water catch, and fish such as oreo dory and others are taken in significant quantities.
