This dramatic shot of an aircraft flying low over the Auckland Aero Club’s building was taken in 1943, at a time when purely recreational flying was heavily restricted. Before and during the Second World War, aero clubs provided elementary training for Royal New Zealand Air Force pilots. After further training, often in Canada under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, these men went on to fly bombing missions for the RAF.
