After the Second World War, aero clubs had out-of-date aircraft and were struggling financially. Government subsidies enabled them to recover during the 1950s, and with advances in aircraft technology, by the 1960s recreational flying was increasing in popularity. This advertisement from about 1960 for the American-made Piper Colt is pitched at the well-off private buyer, and likens the aircraft to that other status symbol of the time – the car. The ‘standard’ price of £2,425 is equivalent to more than $110,000 in 2020.
