Underwater vent

Underwater vent

While the deposits around underwater vents could be exploited for their mineral wealth, they are also of interest to science, and may be conserved. Vent systems are home to some strange life forms that exist without sunlight, and studying them may provide insights into how life on earth began. This hot spring is on the deep-sea Kermadec Ridge north of New Zealand.
