Jem (Arlo Green, at left) and Caz (Elz Carrad) hold hands beside a caravan in a scene from the film Rūrangi.

Written, produced, and performed by New Zealand’s gender diverse community, Rūrangicentres around Caz, a transgender man who returns home to the small town of Rūrangi after a decade away and tries to rebuild relationships with his father, best friend, and ex-boyfriend, all of whom are unaware he has transitioned.

Rūrangi was initially planned as a five-part web series before being edited to become a feature film. It premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival in 2020 and had its New Zealand theatrical release in 2021.
