Hōri Reti, chairperson at Tangoio Marae, twenty kilometres north of Napier, stands in front of his community’s wharenui after Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023. After the mountains of silt inside the wharenui and other buildings on the marae were cleared, the community came together to repair the precious carvings and tukutuku panels, with the help of heritage advisors from Heritage New Zealand and Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand. They also cleared and restored the urupa (cemetery).
