Two Malayan women who had married New Zealand soldiers were photographed with their husbands when they arrived in Wellington in 1959. They are Wendy, with her husband Colin Campbell (left), and Judy, with Mike Stopforth (right). Three other Malayan women arrived with their soldier husbands at the same time. The couples met when the men, of the 1st Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, were taking part in operations during the ‘Malayan Emergency’. This was the 12-year campaign from 1948, conducted by the British and their allies, to combat communist insurgency in Malaya.
