Adult education classes were provided to First World War soldiers by the YMCA, and a full educational programme for returning soldiers commenced in England in 1918. Classes were also held in Egypt and France and on troopships, with the aim of stimulating the intellect and encouraging successful reintegration into civilian life. These soldiers are taking a literary appreciation class in England around 1918 or 1919. The instructor is explaining the poetic concept of balancing couplets.
