The Department of Conservation has put up signs and a viewing platform at Sandfly Bay on the Otago Peninsula so the public can watch yellow-eyed penguins from a safe distance. Volunteer wardens also patrol the beach at busy times and warn visitors not to go near the birds. Adult penguins return from the sea in the evening to feed their young, but will not come close if they see people nearby, meaning the chicks go hungry.
