New Zealand film: Oscars for The piano

At the Academy Awards in 1994, a tale of colonial New Zealand, The piano (1993), was a triple winner. Holly Hunter (left) received an Oscar for best actress in a leading role, Anna Paquin won for best actress in a supporting role, and director Jane Campion for original screenplay. Although the film received substantial French funding, its portrayal of New Zealand history and culture, and the international recognition that this received, benefited local creative industries.
