In June 2012 about 200 Wellingtonians marched behind a hearse carrying a petition with 36,155 signatures asking the government to continue funding TVNZ7. The channel had begun broadcasting in 2007 to take advantage of digital transmission and in response to the Labour government’s decision to introduce a public-service charter for Television New Zealand. However, the incoming National government abandoned the charter and TVNZ decided to close the channel, which provided educational commercial-free programming.
