Tonbridge Mews in Merivale, Christchurch, was designed by Peter Beaven and opened in 1974. It was an attempt to provide a village-like community in an urban setting. By varying the design of each home, Beaven avoided the repetition and uniformity of other townhouse developments. The grounds featured both private and communal spaces. The success of the scheme led Beaven to design another urban village, Thorndon Mews in Wellington, soon after.
