New research techniques like DNA profiling have increased the ability of police to link criminals to crime scene, and have also made it possible to solve historic 'cold cases'. Following significant developments in DNA technology in 2001, a profile was secured of the killer of six-year-old Teresa Cormack. In 2002, 15 years after he committed the crime, Jules Mikus was convicted of Teresa's murder and jailed.
