Michael Moodabe (left), one of the brothers who owned the Amalgamated Cinema chain, and Spyros P. Skouras, president of 20th Century-Fox, are shown here meeting at Wellington's Royal Oak Hotel in 1952. Screen industry veteran John O’Shea described Skouras as one of the ‘shirt-sleeved, cigar-chomping rowdies of America who built up the movie business’. Until the arrival of television, the big distributors had considerable power, largely controlling what the public saw.
