Four passionate Wellingtonians – Martyn Sanderson, Tim Elliott, Peter Bland and Harry Seresin – were primarily behind the formation of Downstage Theatre in 1964, which was eventually housed in the purpose-built Hannah Playhouse on the corner of Courtenay Place and Kent Terrace. The 1991 season included Foreskin's lament, which had first been produced at Downstage in 1985. Written by Greg McGee, it was a landmark play in New Zealand theatre. It was first staged just before and after the highly divisive 1981 Springbok rugby tour, and its trenchant examination of the place of rugby in New Zealand culture hit a nerve.
