Richard Barrer, the founding father of zeolite chemistry, is shown speaking at his retirement from Imperial College, London, in 1977. Barrer came from a sheep farm in the Wairarapa and studied at the University of Canterbury. He went to the United Kingdom in 1932, where he was based until his death in 1996. Zeolites are porous aluminosilicate crystals which have become widely used in industry.
