'Down the hall on Saturday night'

'Down the hall on Saturday night'

Peter Cape's song 'Down the hall on Saturday night' (first recorded in 1960) immortalised the 1950s social tradition of dancing in the local hall on a Saturday night (pictured). Along with Cape's song 'Taumarunui', 'Down the hall' became a New Zealand folk icon.
