Concert-goers listen to a performance by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra at Wellington's Michael Fowler Centre in the early 2000s. The opening of the acoustically revolutionary Christchurch Town Hall in 1972 led Wellington and Auckland to build new concert halls as well, the Michael Fowler and Aotea centres respectively. They were all designed in modernist architectural style. While lacking the ornateness of earlier halls they still had an appropriate sense of grandeur.
