Kōrero: Children and sport

The rise of organised sport during the 1920s increased demands for playing fields and other sporting infrastructure. This photograph shows the building of Hataitai Park in Wellington using spoil excavated from hillsides. It was a relief work scheme (for the unemployed) during the 1930s economic depression. The park provided much-needed tennis and netball courts as well as a rugby ground. Wellington's velodrome was built later built higher up the hill.
