Despite bad weather, 28,471 people crowded into Carisbrook on 21 June 1930 for the first rugby test between the All Blacks and the British Lions. At that time the ground still had few grandstands and the spectators were forced to stand close together and depend on umbrellas for protection from the snow. The gate takings of £4,441 were a record for a match in New Zealand up to that time. Many must have left disappointed, as the Lions won 6–3, although they lost the subsequent three tests.
