A capable man of business who had status among both Pakeha and his Ngati Kahungunu people in Hawke’s Bay, in the 1870s Henare Matua became a leader of the Repudiation Movement. The movement sought to prevent the sale of Maori land to Pakeha, and to regain lands that had been lost.
