Many New Zealanders have worked overseas as part of the Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) programmes, which began in 1962. Dallas Roy (pictured), a former army officer with peacekeeping and disaster relief experience in Asia and the Pacific, was appointed VSA’s programme officer in Dili, East Timor in 2001. In this image, Dallas is learning a version of hopscotch at Cassa, near Suai – much to the amusement of the locals.
