Two miners undertake domestic tasks outside their shack around 1890, with a sign above the door stating, ‘A girl wanted’. The picture may have been staged, but its point was clear – this work was necessary, but men didn’t usually do it and didn’t want to. Men’s work was more likely to involve others (so was more sociable), and often allowed more leisure than that typically done by women.
