Kōrero: Sport and society

Scots immigrants to New Zealand brought their distinctive style of wrestling. Here two men compete at the New Zealand International Exhibition in Christchurch (1906–7). In Scots wrestling each competitor places their left arm above the right arm and shoulder of the opponent and their right arm below the other's left arm. Once they are locked in this embrace, the bout begins and each tries to force the other onto the ground. In this image the man with the white jersey has just won a fall.
