Kōrero: Picnics and barbecues

Members of the Auckland Scenery Conservation Society hold a picnic at the summit of the Waitākere Ranges in April 1900. The government-appointed Scenery Preservation Commission, along with citizens' groups such as the Auckland Scenery Conservation Society, were responsible for preserving many scenic areas as sites for picnics and general recreation. Many of these areas were acquired by compulsory purchase from Māori owners. Māori were often unwilling to sell as they had suffered a high degree of land loss.
