A poster advertises the 'Picnic in the Park' at Newlands, Wellington, in 2012. Community picnics remain popular, although they no longer have the central role they held in 19th- and early-20th-century social calendars. Modern crowds often have picnic meals at events such as summer open-air concerts. Children's picnic games are often non-competitive events such as playing on bouncy castles, as opposed to the races and competitions of earlier community picnics.
