Picnickers head from the train to the Evansdale picnic grounds, a few miles north of Dunedin, on Labour Day, 1905. Labour Day picnics were major events in the early 20th century, drawing crowds in their thousands to events organised at popular sites. These picnics included sports such as running, cycling and sometimes yacht or dinghy races. Brass bands were often on hand to keep the crowds entertained.
