These Evening Postadvertisements from the start of the picnic season in December 1927 give an idea of the scale and level of organisation of community picnics. Lodges and friendly societies usually had large annual picnics, as did temperance societies, volunteer units, sports clubs and other social groups. The organisers often arranged special picnic trains or ferries for transport. At large community picnics it was generally expected that hot water would be provided for the picnickers' tea.
