Canvas village, Ōrākei, 1910

In the 2000s the beachfront at Ōrākei, beneath Auckland's Bastion Point, is the busy four-lane Tamaki Drive. But in the summer of late 1910, when this photo was taken, it was a camping site lined with tents, some apparently equipped with chimneys. The Feilding Star reported: 'In most of the beautiful bays in the harbour campers are to be found, and at the beauty spots near the city small canvas villages have sprung up. At Takapuna and Milford Beach there are a number of happy parties in camp, while at Orakei Bay and in many coves on that side of the harbour tents are dotted in all directions.'
