Pūhā, Nga Tapuwae College market, 1980

Pūhā is one of the few indigenous New Zealand plants considered a vegetable. A popular, long-standing dish in Māori communities is a boil-up of pork bones and pūhā served with potatoes. Here, Rose Dutt (left) and Tai Mahi are selling pūhā (the leafy vegetable in the bowl) and cabbage at a Nga Tapuwae College market in Auckland in 1980.
