These two young girls are enjoying chocolate-covered ice creams on a suburban street in 1944. Ice cream had been eaten in New Zealand since the 19th century, but demand for ice cream by American servicemen stationed in New Zealand between 1942 and 1944, and the increasing presence of home freezers, meant much more was eaten from the 1940s.
