The National Hockey Stadium in Berhampore, Wellington, opened with two artificial-turf pitches in 1985. Demand for its facilities increased until play often continued under floodlights until 10 p.m. or later. In 2012 the trust administering the stadium called for a third pitch and an upgrade of stadium and other facilities to meet growing demand.
